847: THE FINAL DEFEAT OF SKALLANDIEH
The situation of the Skallands was now dire. In February, a general attack by the Atlanteans all along the Sulophaio and Cunaphai and out of Yciel Atlantis and Phaioso to the east as far as Ishifal, and to the south to meet up with the Leiyola army was a massive success, and many of the Skalland forces just melted away. A new line was eventually consolidated , but further retreats could only be a matter of time. Even in the east, around Mountan, and along the mountains to the north of the Cressdun Pass, where small advances and retreats had occurred throughout the last three years, Atlantean forces now made more striking advances into Skalland territory. In March, Skallandieh put out messages seeking a ceasefire and a return to the status quo before 844, but Atlantis was now on a roll, and was determined to finish with Skallandieh once and for all. Skallandieh had tried to persuade Quendelieh to intervene and negotiate a truce, but Quendelieh in fact simply declared itself more firmly on Atlantis’ side. Atlantis had already offered Quendelieh complete control of Yciel Atlantis after the war, subject only to it reverting to Atlantis, if ever Quendelieh was constrained to withdraw all its troops from the Great Continent. (This prescient clause, however unlikely it seemed in 847 that it would ever be needed, was in fact invoked during the Final Wars, when Quendelieh was forced to withdraw from Yciel Atlantis and elsewhere because of a crisis at home. But by then, it was too late for Atlantis to take over Yciel Atlantis, which was abandoned to Skallandieh for ever). Quendelieh thereupon permitted Atlantean ships to pass through the Phonerianix Lirilix, and in April a great amphibious invasion force entered the Eliossia Liranca, swatting away a few small attacks by remaining Skalland ships, and landed at the mouth of the river Ereiphe. During May and June, it advanced in all directions, seizing Arelosa, moving up the river, and meeting up with the Phaioso force at Neryaso. To the south, a large Atlantean tank force burst round the west of Mount Netaka, and drove straight to Marossulo. Pobocom, further west on the Ruphaio, was also captured by the Phaioso army. Other forces advanced on Anetako and Cairtan. The Skallands finally sued for peace at any price, and the war finished at the end of June 847. In the subsequent peace-treaty, brokered by Quendelieh, Skallandieh handed over the whole of the old Marossan Province, up to the river Ereipha, and including Marossulo and the Dortan-Toill Caidhu mountains to the east, to Atlantis. Most of this area became part of a now huge new Province of Marossan, while eastern portions were added to Naokeltanieh. Yciel Atlantis was handed over lock, stock and barrel to the Quendi, who were also gradually allowed to station troops in the north of Marossan as well. Much of the old Eliossien areas of Skallandieh now rebelled, not without help from Atlantis and Quendelieh, and various small independent states emerged: Skallandieh was reduced to its more central areas and the old North Kelt lands.
